After the Police Report Panel: The Role of Victim Services in Law Enforcement Settings

This engaging panel discussion will provide participants with an inside look at what occurs after a report is made to law enforcement. Featuring local law enforcement-based victim services professionals, the panel will explore the law enforcement response process, including initial response, investigation and follow-up, communication with victims and survivors, and the advocacy and support available throughout the process.
Panelists will clarify the role of victim services within a law enforcement setting, discuss effective collaboration between law enforcement and victim advocates, and examine the complexities of balancing victim autonomy and individual wishes with law enforcement responsibilities and legal obligations.
The discussion will also explore the unique barriers and challenges experienced by domestic violence victims who have repeated contact with law enforcement, including factors that may influence a victim’s decisions, engagement with the criminal justice system, and readiness to pursue available options. Panelists will highlight trauma-informed and victim-centered approaches that promote safety, dignity, and informed decision-making while recognizing the limitations and responsibilities of the criminal justice system.
Finally, the panel will highlight local resources, multidisciplinary partnerships, and collaborative strategies that can strengthen coordinated responses and improve support for victims and survivors throughout their interactions with law enforcement and the broader criminal justice system.
