Our History
In the early 1990’s, several crime victim service providers throughout Minnesota began meeting informally for the purpose of providing support and sharing knowledge and resources with each other. This group of dedicated individuals identified the need to become more organized in their efforts. Out of this need, the Minnesota General Crime Victim Coalition was born and incorporated in 1993.
In the early years, the Minnesota General Crime Victim Coalition operated only with volunteer help; then in 1997, a part-time Executive Director was hired. Throughout the years, dedicated coalition members and volunteers of MGCVC sought to advance services for victims of general crime. General crime in Minnesota includes 39 specific crimes such as identity theft, kidnapping, child abuse, stalking, domestic and sexual abuse, gang crimes, arson, hate/bias crimes, elder abuse, drunken driving crashes and homicide.
In 2007, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to change the name of the Coalition to the Minnesota Alliance on Crime. The Board decided the name better suited the direction they wanted the Coalition to take. Aligning the organization with other statewide and local programs including prosecutors, law enforcement, legislative leaders, and advocates promotes better crime victim services in all facets of the criminal justice system and beyond.
Today’s membership includes professionals from all areas of victim services and the criminal justice system as well as victims and survivors of crime. MAC exists to bring general crime victim advocacy programs and other organizations and professionals together to better assist and serve crime victims and further their rights. In short, we strive to provide a unified voice for victims of crime as well as their advocates throughout the state of Minnesota.
